Women’s Premier League Merlins Travel To Take On Chicago North Shore

by | Sep 13, 2018 | Elite Women

Glendale’s Women’s Premier League squad will travel to Illinois this weekend, taking on Chicago North Shore on Sunday, September 16. Coming off a strong win against the Berkeley All Blues side, the Merlins will look to carry their early season momentum on the road. Head Coach Luke Gross knows the away game will be a challenge: “The numbers don’t show it right now, but Chicago is a very good team. They’ve given a lot of teams a hard time, and that’s because they’re probably the most physical bunch in our division,” he said. As for playing away from home, Gross admits that it can wear on a team: “It’s always tough traveling. It throws you off a little bit.”

Coming into the weekend winless on the season, North Shore has plenty to prove against a Merlins squad that has found its stride a few weeks in. Tied with the San Diego Surfers for second in the division, the Glendale team trails the All Blues for top honors. Merlins Coach Luke Gross says the focus for his team is taking home a championship: “The mindset is that this isn’t about one game. We want the championship, that’s our goal. Each match is a step toward that goal, so we can never step back and take a weekend off. We never look past any team. We have a blue collar mentality, and we want to win.”

The next home match is a friendly for the WPL Merlins on September 22, when Glendale hosts Lindenwood at Infinity Park. Follow all of the Glendale teams on Facebook and Twitter for full-time scores on all games and additional information. For the 2018 season, the WPL Merlins will be playing on the Infinity Park Stadium pitch, opening for the professional men’s team, the Glendale Raptors.
