Merlins Victorious Over Oregon Sports Union Glendale 46 – Oregon 14

by | Sep 4, 2018 | Elite Women

The Women’s Premier League Glendale Merlins traveled to Portland this weekend, taking on the Oregon Sports Union side. Taking a tough loss against San Diego to start the season, the Merlins bounced back against the Oregon team in stupendous fashion, earning an impressive 46-14 win.

Playing at the highest level of women’s rugby in the United States, and with a long and decorated history, the Merlins stepped things up against a physical Oregon side. Glendale Head Coach and Director of Amateur Rugby Luke Gross was complimentary of his squad’s performance: “We came off a loss and then made the necessary adjustments. We fixed some things. We won.” Gross noted that the Merlins side weathered an early storm from the Oregon team to achieve victory: “They’re a very powerful, forward-oriented team. We felt that fury for the first thirty minutes,” he said. “We came back when the game settled down and controlled the tackle contest. The ladies were effective. Hats off to them.”

The Merlins struck first in the match, dotting down in the 7th minute, converting the kick after to give Glendale an early 7-0 lead. Oregon responded just five minutes later, touching down for five and then converting to tie the match. Glendale found the try zone again at 22 minutes. Unable to convert, the score was 12-7. The Merlins scored again in the 31st minute, but the conversion attempt was off the mark for the second time in the match – the Colorado side entered the half ahead, 17-7.

The second half began with an offensive push from the Merlins, dotting down just two minutes after the break, failing to convert, then finding the try zone again and splitting the uprights at 47 minutes. Seven minutes into the second half, Glendale held a substantial 29-7 lead. The Merlins would touch down three more unanswered tries in regulation time, converting one to take an unassailable 46-7 point lead over the hometown Oregon team at the 80-minute mark. ORSU touched down and converted in the 82nd minute, but the effort was far too little, far too late. The Merlins emerged victorious, 46-14.
