Merlins Fall To San Diego In Season Opener

The Glendale Merlins Women’s Premier League (WPL) side traveled to California over the weekend, challenging San Diego on the pitch. Ultimately losing their season opener, the Merlins put up a hard fight to start the year. Under the experienced tutelage of new Head Coach and Glendale Director of Amateur Rugby Luke Gross, the team is looking to continue their long history of success at the highest level.

San Diego started the match with an offensive burst, dotting down within the first minute of play and converting to take a 7-0 lead. The onslaught continued with an unconverted try at 18 minutes, giving the California team a 12-0 lead. Two additional first half tries, each converted, put San Diego ahead 26-0. The Merlins found the try zone in the 34th minute, but were unable to convert. The score going into the break was San Diego 26, Glendale 5.

San Diego struck first as the second half kicked off, dotting down in the 45th minute of the match. The Merlins responded just six minutes later, touching down five points and converting to bring the score to 31-12, advantage San Diego. Refusing to give up, the Glendale squad dotted down once more at 65 minutes. Unable to convert but holding the San Diego offense in check, the Merlins worked to rally late. The remainder of the match was a defensive stalemate, the Merlins ultimately falling to the San Diego side 31-22.

Loosehead Prop and Merlins captain Sarah Chobot knows the team will improve through the season, employing a unique mix of experience and fresh talent: “We’ve got new characters coming on. They’re going to develop, find their niche, their role.” The team will work for victory in their next match, when they travel to Portland to take on the Oregon Sports Union WPL team.

The Merlins first home match is September 8th, when Glendale hosts Berkeley WPL at Infinity Park.
