Merlin Carmen Farmer Becomes A Barbarian

Glendale Merlins player Carmen Farmer received the call of a lifetime this week when the legendary Barbarians Football Club asked her to join a Barbarians squad that will open a double-header in Twickenham stadium versus the England national team, the Red Roses.
To be chosen for the Barbarians FC is a considerable honor as the team is composed of many international stars, with the current lineup representing eight countries. Farmer, who will be the only American on the roster, has played for the Barbarians FC in the past, most recently here in Glendale when the Barbarians faced off against the U.S. national women’s team. She believes her experience with the Barbarians and their desire for a strong lock placed her into the lineup.

With seven years of rugby under her belt, Farmer has played in a number of sevens tournaments around the world and in the Rugby World Cup in France in 2014. When asked about what she is looking forward to with this experience, Carmen stated “I’m looking forward to playing in Twickenham stadium, which is one of the largest rugby stadiums in the world. The chance to play with a team of talented and athletic women as a Barbarian is incredible.” She also noted, “having the chance to spend time meeting and training with the men’s Barbarian team will also be a valuable experience.”
Farmer, who is returning this fall to play as a Merlin in the Women’s Premier League, will hit the road this weekend so she can practice with the squad before the big match on June 2nd.
