Glendale Merlins DI Women’s Team Continues to Build on Early Successes
As told by Merlins Division I Head Coach Angie Cranmore

Well, we are in our seventh week of training and we are currently 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. We recently beat our biggest rival, and a team that we have not beaten in the past, the Utah Vipers 30-22. This was a huge confidence builder for the women and a great way to start off conference play for the Glendale Merlins DI Women’s team season.

The women grew leaps and bounds from this match both mentally and physically. I’ve not seen the Glendale D1 women play with such composure and confidence. With 30+ women showing up to trainings every Monday and Wednesday nights it makes each position competitive and makes each player work for that roster spot. I’m very proud of this team and glad to be a part of it.
This week, specifically, we are preparing for our second conference match against Black Ice, our cross-town rivals. This side has always given us a good match and our last one against them was no different. It took us about 20 minutes before we put the first points on the board, but we were certainly tested in those 20 minutes and backed into our own half of the field for most of it. Again, the women showed composure and maturity in the way they stuck to the attack plan and kept fighting. We ended up with a 26-12 victory in that first match and our confidence has only continued to build since.
We have also have had several good practices since our last meeting and are looking to change things up a bit with our attack and plan to put a lot more pressure on them to create opportunities. Should be an exciting match! Come out and watch us this Saturday, April 14. Our game kicks off at noon.
