Saturday the Glendale Merlins will work to solidify their standings in the Division I Red River Conference, looking to build further confidence on the heels of their victory last week. With the Glendale Merlins at Dallas Rugby Red, the team will travel to Texas to face a strong team that has started its season undefeated. Merlins Head Coach Luke Gross recognizes the competition is stiff: “The Dallas Reds are one of the top men’s clubs in the country. They’re doing really well and they’ve got well-rounded team both on attack and defense.”

Glendale will need to play well to best the Reds, a task Gross is confident the team are equal to: “Coming off our win in Little Rock we played very tactically. Defensive line speed was very in your face: controlled, intelligent rugby. If we can play like that, we’ll give them a good game.” Injuries and issues with availability have proven challenges for the Merlins early in this season, but Glendale’s extensive rugby programming may provide a creative solution, one that will also work handily toward player development. Coach Gross explains: “We’ve brought up a couple of players from Glendale’s Under-20 team to help fill in for injured or unavailable D1 guys. We are looking forward to seeing how these U20 guys perform at this level.”

The Merlins next Division I match is again on the road, the team traveling back to Texas to face the Austin Huns on February 17 at 2:30pm Mountain Time. February 9 will see the official start of the season for the Glendale Merlins Under-20 team, who will host BYU on Infinity Park’s Turf Field at 6pm. Follow the Glendale Merlins on Facebook and Twitter for full-time scores on all games and additional information.

Glendale’s first home game of the season is March 10, when the Merlins will face off against the Austin Blacks on Infinity Park’s Turf Field at 3pm. All Merlins home games will have free admission in 2018.
